چکیده

Electric-field-induced birefringence of a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal BPLC is investigated. In the low field region, conventional Kerr effect holds. As the electric field increases, the induced birefringence gradually saturates and deviates from Kerr effect. An exponential convergence model, called extended Kerr effect, is proposed to fit the experimental data. Good agreement between experiment and model is obtained. This extended Kerr effect will make a significant impact to the optimization of emerging BPLC display devices. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3318288

Extended Kerr effect in a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal composite

Abstract As the electric field increases, the induced birefringence of a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal gradually deviates from the conventional Kerr effect and finally saturates. A new convergence model, named extended Kerr effect, is proposed to explain this saturation phenomenon. This model will give a more accurate account on the electro-optic effect of the emerging bluephase ...

Dielectric dispersion on the Kerr constant of blue phase liquid crystals

Dielectric dispersions on the Kerr constant of two polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) are investigated. An extended Cole-Cole model is proposed to fit the experimental results and good agreement is obtained. As the electric field frequency increases, Kerr constant decreases and the associated dielectric heating effect gradually increases. These results will undoubtedly affect...

Polymer-stabilized optically isotropic liquid crystals for next-generation display and photonics applications

Polymer-stabilized optically isotropic liquid crystals, including blue phases, are emerging as a strong contender for next-generation display technology because they exhibit some revolutionary features such as no need for surface alignment, submillisecond response time, isotropic dark state, and cell gap insensitivity. The basic material properties, including electric field-induced birefringenc...

Diluter Effects on Large Dielectric Anisotropy Blue Phase Liquid Crystals

We have investigated diluter effects on the Debye relaxation frequency, and electro-optics of polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (BPLC). The relaxation frequency can be increased by adding a small amount of diluters, which benefits high frequency operation of BPLC. Some diluters significantly decrease the BPLC response time while maintaining similar Kerr constant. Author
